Lentil soup with carrots and fish
In an experiment with a bag of red lentils and another bag of split yellow peas I found at an exotic store, I decided to make a lentil and peas soup. The soup I created is loosely based on this recipe from 101 Cookbooks. I’ve added a little more taste to it with very spicy Scotch Bonnet paste and some texture from pieces of white fish (I used cod). You can easily replace the butter in this...

New York: brunch, Asian food and general happiness
Saturday is brunch day! At least, in New York that is. We have no such thing as brunches with booze in Amsterdam. Something I’m very willing to change, by the way. I mean, why start the day with a sad sober breakfast, when the first thing you could (and should) be having on a Saturday morning is a tasty Bloody Mary with your sandwich or a freshly made Screwdriver with your eggs benedict?

New York, days 5 and 6
Okay, I should really wrap up my NY trip posts. The trip was 4 months ago! I’ll just cram the rest of the pictures and restaurants into the two last posts. This post will cover days 5 and 6, and the last one will mostly be about awesome Asian food I had the pleasure of eating on days 7 and 8. I’ll try to write them both in one night, so I can continue writing about the recipes...

New York - Day 4 with breakfast and other good...
They know how to serve breakfast in NYC. I’ve never had baked beans this early in the day before I came to New York. They were stuffed inside my California omelette, together with tomatoes. It was delicious, especially because the omelette was accompanied by a nice green salad with a carrot dressing. Husband had a big bowl of granola with fruit and yoghurt.
And we had coffee with it. Now,...

Break from the NY posts - time for Dutch food!
I’ve been back from New York for more than a month already (half way through the NY posts, by the way!) and this blog needed a break from all the American food. So when I was having dinner at work some time ago, the mashed endive with potatoes inspired me to write a bit about Dutch food. I have to say that I almost never eat traditional Dutch food anymore, just because I enjoy other...

New York - Fatty Crab - Day 3
There’s a little happy place in the West Village where you can eat awesome Asian food and just be generally happy. It’s called Fatty Crab and when we visited it, they had a great Restaurant Week lunch menu. Their super friendly staff made us feel at home immediately, served us a big bottle of tap water and we sat down to pick out our lunch.
We decided to get Watermelon Pickles...

New York - Katz' Delicatessen - Day 3
There were a few places on my to do-list that I absolutely had to see while I was in New York. Katz’ Delicatessen was one of them. Their pastrami sandwich has been world famous for ages (Katz’ has been in business for over 100 years already), and I just had to taste it. So on the morning of day 3, I dragged my still half food-filled body (day 2 was pretty heavy on the stomach!) out of...

New York, I love you - Day 2
After landing on JFK, dining with cocktails and breakfast in a standard diner, I was totally ready to experience New York. Walking around Manhattan the entire morning made me pretty hungry, and when we walked into Chinatown, we found this little gem: Les Enfants Terribles. The place was nearly empty when we sat down for lunch, but we really couldn’t care less. Hungry!
The first thing I...

Day 1 (and a bit) of New York
Those of you who know me, know that I won’t get on a plane easily. I don’t really like flying; the idea of spending hours in a metal pipe flying 36,000 feet above the earth somehow doesn’t excite me. However, the prospect of staying in New York for 7 days - home to a number of great chefs and even greater restaurants - was tempting enough for me to get over myself and book a...

Yummy yummy yummy, cannelloni in my tummy
My supermarket doesn’t stock real cannelloni rolls. I guess they never get them sold, as there aren’t a lot of foodies in my neighborhood. So when I wanted to make a nice cannelloni dish with spinach and chicken, I had to make do with fresh lasagna sheets, which worked out pretty nicely.
Groceries (3 servings)
9 fresh lasagna sheets
250g frozen spinach
200g chicken (cooked and...

Mexican dinner party
Some days are just made to host a dinner party. After a very nice Indonesian lunch with my friend @rpish at Kantjil & De Tijger, I rushed off to my neighborhood’s market to buy veggies and herbs for tonight’s dinner. I planned on cooking enough for at least 10 people, not being entirely sure how many would show up. I would need appetizers, sticky rice, spicy chicken, some salads...
